Ha I avoid caffeine lately. Have Kristen interview me on what I do — I think it might be a GOOD blog entry :)
And here I’m feeling all proud of my four queries….geez :-)
Girl, this is not about comparing yourself to other people, it’s about doing your best! And if you think that sounds cheezy, how about this? YOU’RE ALL WINNERS. Unless, of course, you don’t report your numbers to me when I ask you to, in which case you are a big fat loser. So just do the best you can to keep at it, and KEEP ME POSTED SO I CAN GIVE YOU CREDIT.
LOL I’m glad I did my queries yesterday, then, and not before you asked us :-)
Incidentally, one of those queries already got accepted by Mother Earth News. Not for a huge sum, but what the heck–it’s Mother Earth News!

Okay… silly me. I am a decent writer and have been writing a column for a regional sports publication for several years.
I seem to have a great fear of writing a query. I have seen many, many examples, but is there a specific up to date resource that would be the best to get me started? I just cannot seem to get past the intial hump of writing actual queries. I am also a bit of a perfectionist.
Can you suggest a definitive resource or perhaps the best way to start out?

Absolutely, Amy! The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters That Rock and Lisa Collier Cool’s How to Write Irresistible Query Letters.
I just finished How to Write Irresistible Query Letters and the library only had the 1987 edition. Every time she mentioned typewriters vs. “word processing computer,” I thanked my lucky stars for Word 2007!! I can’t even imagine life pre-word processing computer!
This challenge has made me realize the dramatic change in editorial etiquette – editors don’t respond anymore. They just don’t. Not even a “no thanks” email. Nothing. Nada. Even my snail mail queries remain unanswered.
Why, back in the day…. :)) Seriously, ten years ago there was a protocol that both writers and editors followed – at the editors’ insistence. Yet nowadays, they’re the ones who stopped responding. And it’s probably because they’re overworked. Whatever. It just sucks. :)
