What’s Your Biggest Financial Fear As a Freelancer?

by Kristen King on September 2, 2008

dollar money cash income finances figures(www.inkthinkerblog.com) — Miranda at Yielding Wealth posted an insightful article about financial fears last week that really hit home for me.

Miranda’s top financial fears:

  1. Losing a lucrative regular gig.
  2. Having something happen to the car.
  3. Her husband won’t be able to find a job when he’s done with his PhD.

My top financial fears:

  1. Losing a lucrative regular gig.
  2. Having something happen to one of the dogs. (Oh, wait, that DID happen!)
  3. My husband will lose his job and not have a new one. (Oh, wait, that happened, too!)

So far, I’m 2 for 3. I don’t like the trend. But interestingly, the world didn’t stop turning when my worst fears came true.

What I liked about Miranda’s post is that she took a very positive approach to her fears by describing how she will confront them and even potentially prevent them. What are YOUR worst financial fears, and how will you deal?

My biggest fear is falling sick and unable to work for a long time ( say a week or 2). So I took out insurance that pays cash for every day you’re booked sick by your doctor. I also have a provident fund that pays out if the illness is longer-term.

My second biggest fear is losing a regular, lucrative gig. I’m constantly working to expand my income base so I do not rely on one major client every month. I’m also trying to build a savings cache that could cover me for 3-6 months.

My third biggest fear is that I will have no work in December/January. Except for retailers and the hospitality industry, most companies in SA close in December for the festive season, opening after the new year. So I need to build my December income right now and line up work by Nov that’s due in Jan.

Layoffs stink. I’m sorry that one happened to your husband, Kristen. Here’s hoping that things will look up soon for the both of you.
